Playing Rules

The Slo-Pitch Ontario rules will be followed with the following exceptions:

  1. A commitment line will be drawn across the base path 20 feet from home plate. A safe line will be drawn across the base path at home plate. Runners crossing the commitment line must continue to home plate. Runners are not allowed to touch home plate. If a runner returns to third base after crossing the commitment line doing so results in an automatic out. Under no circumstances may the catcher tag the runner out past the commitment line, doing so results in the runner being safe at home.
  2. There will be a maximum of 10 players on the field and a minimum of 3 females. A team will forfeit the game if they have less than 8 players and/or 3 females. There is a 15 minute grace period before the game is forfeited.
  3. If a male batter is walked on 4 pitches and a female batter is on deck, the male batter will be awarded second base.
  4. The batting order is fixed after one complete round through the order. Players may arrive late and be added to the bottom of the order provided that their team has not completed a round of the batting order. A team cannot bat more than two male batters in a row including in the transition from the bottom to the top of the order.
  5. Pinch Runners – Three per gender per game. The pinch runner may be any eligible player provided they are the same gender of the player they are running for.
  6. Injury Runners – If anyone is injured they should not be playing. However if a player is injured during game play, they may have an Injury runner from first base. The batter may not advance beyond first base. The injury runner is the last out of the same gender.
  7. No new inning may begin after 85 minutes. Games last 9 innings or 90 minutes.
  8. Mercy rule is 15 runs after 7 innings during regular season games. Post Season games are 15 runs after 5 innings during round robin play. No mercy rule during semi-final and final games.
  9. Maximum of 2 over-the-fence home run differential between teams at all times, if a batter hits an over-the-fence home run when their team already has 2 more home runs than the other team, the batter is awarded a single and runners may advance one base.
  10. If a player leaves the game for any reason, except injury, he/she is an automatic out unless a substitute is available. If a female batter is injured during the game, the female batters will rotate in order to the position of the injured player (as long as there are still 3 females playing). This may change the fixed position of the batting order.
  11. No intentional bunting, there must be a full swing. Intentional bunts will result in the batter being called out.
  12. Infield fly rule will apply at the umpire’s discretion.
  13. 6’ arc minimum required for pitches up to a maximum of 12′
  14. All bats must have a readable USSSA BPF 1.20 “Thumbprint.” All other bats are illegal and the use of said bats could result in suspension.
  15. There will be a 175′ line drawn in the outfield. All 4 outfielders must remain behind the line prior to the batter making contact with the ball. All infielders must remain on the infield prior to the batter making contact with the ball.
  16. All umpire play calls are final, players may not dispute play calls with the umpire, doing so may result in ejection at the umpire’s discretion. Ejected players may also be suspended by the league. Team captains may dispute rule interpretations with the umpire, but the umpire’s decision is still final. Captains may continue a game under dispute and the league will review the complaint. The outcome of the disputed game is still final. Abuse of umpires or other captains and players will not be tolerated and the offending player will be ejected from the game and suspended by the league.
  17. Pitching Masks/Helmets are MANDATORY. If you do not have one you cannot pitch and your team will forfeit if you do not have a pitcher.
  18. Hitting the pitcher with a batted ball when pitcher is standing in designated pitching area – Batter will be called out on the umpire’s discretion. Dead ball, no one advances.
